Motor vehicle accidents: 2 dead in Colorado

Two people are dead after a stolen vehicle struck their car in Fort Collins. The office of the Larimer County Coroner has confirmed that a 55-year-old man and his 38-year-old daughter lost their lives in the Colorado accident. Motor vehicle accidents where a crime is suspected are always carefully investigated to ensure appropriate charges are filed against the driver or drivers responsible.

According to reports, a stolen vehicle was used to break into a pawn shop in Fort Collins some hours before the accident. The 19-year-old man driving the stolen vehicle was apparently also involved in the theft of several guns from the pawn shop. Sometime later the same day, the man crashed that vehicle into the car driven by a 55-year-old individual from out of state.

The impact killed the Iowa man and his daughter. The younger driver was apprehended and charged with burglary, motor vehicle theft and evading police. Officers say more charges are likely forthcoming, pending the outcome of their ongoing investigation. There is no word as to whether the man has retained criminal defense counsel at this time.

The tragedy of fatal motor vehicle accidents on Colorado roadways cannot be overstated, and at no time is this more true than when an accident is caused by someone in the midst of criminal activity. The 19-year-old driver, if found guilty, will likely face serious criminal consequences for his actions. In addition, Colorado state law will also allow the families of the deceased to file separate wrongful death lawsuits in civil court. If the car the accused was driving was indeed stolen, the families may have to turn to their own motor vehicle or homeowners' insurance policies to investigate whether there is uninsured coverage available.
