Motor vehicle accidents: Colorado man victim of street racers

A man and a woman are facing serious charges after an alleged street racing event caused the death of another man. The Colorado Springs Police Department has confirmed that both individuals are facing charges of vehicular homicide following the fatal crash. As with many motor vehicle accidents, this crash is still under investigation in order for police to gather evidence and make a formal report with their findings.

Reportedly, a 64-year-old man was attempting to negotiate a turn onto Cimarron Street when his vehicle was struck by a southbound car. The second vehicle is estimated to have been traveling at some 70 mph at the time of the impact. Police believe the 32-year-old woman behind the wheel may have been engaged in a street race with another vehicle, driven by a 26-year-old man.

The older driver was pronounced dead of his injuries. The condition of the other two drivers was not mentioned, but they do not appear to have been taken to a hospital for any injuries. Instead, both were arrested and charged with vehicular homicide. They were remanded to a county jail in El Paso County to await court proceedings.

The tragedy of many motor vehicle accidents is that they are often preventable. Street racing is a crime, and if the two individuals accused of contributing to the other driver's death are found to have been engaging in racing, they could spend time in prison for their role in the crash. Separately, the family of the deceased man is entitled under Colorado law to file lawsuits against the accused drivers for wrongful death. These claims are handled in civil court, but evidence of the drivers' negligence in connection with the accident will be required if the court is to award damages to the grieving family.
