Motor vehicle accidents: 1 dead, 2 hurt in Colorado

A single-vehicle crash in Pueblo has resulted in the death of a passenger, according to local police. The three Colorado residents who were in the vehicle at the time of the accident all suffered injuries, and one of those three was pronounced dead as a result. As is the case with many motor vehicle accidents, officials are still investigating the cause of this tragedy, and charges against the driver have not yet been filed.

According to the limited information available at this time, it appears that around 4:40 a.m. on Dec. 19, a vehicle was headed northbound on Interstate 25 when it abruptly rolled over in the median. Two people were ejected from the car when it rolled, one of whom was the victim who died at the scene. The other occupant who was ejected suffered injuries described as non life-threatening.

The driver also suffered injuries, though not considered life-threatening. The identities of all three individuals have not been made public by police in the immediate aftermath of the accident. The interstate remained closed for several hours to facilitate the police investigation into the cause of the crash.

Motor vehicle accidents always have a cause, be it driver error, intoxication, recklessness or a host of other factors. Colorado police will work to determine the cause of this accident and gauge whether criminal charges should be filed against the driver. However, if sufficient evidence exists that the driver was materially responsible for the crash, both the injured party and the family of the deceased may choose to file lawsuits against the driver in civil court, regardless of whether criminal charges are filed.
